Onion Rice Recipe
I like making rice with onions when I want something different than plain boiled rice. The onion flavors rice and makes it smell and taste good. My family loves it when I make it because of how tasty it is. It's so flavorful you don't have to serve it with sauce or stew.
My fried onion rice recipe uses a few ingredients you will likely have in your kitchen already.
It is a versatile side dish that can be served with chicken, fish, steak, vegetables, or any other mains.
This recipe is ready in 30 minutes and makes a great side dish for any occasion.
Ingredients
Here are what you'll need to make onion rice:
Rice- I used long grain rice. It can be substituted for basmati rice.
Onion- Brown onion, white, yellow or even red onion can be used for this recipe. They all work.
Oil- Olive oil is my first choice; if unavailable, I use sunflower or vegetable oil.
Salt
Chicken broth or water- Use chicken broth instead of water for extra flavor.
How To Make Onion Rice
Step 1- Peel and chop the onions.
Step 2- Wash rice till the water runs clear. This takes about 3-4 rinses. Drain and set aside.
Step 3- Place a pan or pot on medium heat, add oil then add the chopped onions. Fry the onions till translucent, and release their aroma.
Step 4 - Add the washed rice to the pot, add chicken stock and salt. Stir then cover the pot with its lid.
Step 5- Cook on medium heat till it starts to boil then reduce to low heat and continue to cook till the water dries and the rice is tender. This takes about 20-25 minutes.
Step 6- Take the pot off the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes. Take the lid off and stir to combine.
Serve and enjoy.
