One Pan Chicken Drumsticks and Rice

One Pan Chicken and Rice Recipe

Cooking chicken and rice in a pan is easy and quick. This recipe is ready in 30 minutes and you have tender, juicy chicken with flavorful and tasty rice dish the whole family will love.

I like that only minimal prep is required to make this chicken drumsticks and rice recipe and as it is cooked in one pan, less cleanup is required.

Only a few ingredients are used in making this tasty chicken legs and rice dish and are what you likely already have in your pantry.

It's budget-friendly and perfect as a weeknight dinner for the family.

My children love it when I cook one pan rice and chicken and prefer it to plain rice and sauce.

I used golden sella basmati rice for this post but I regularly use Easy cook long grain rice too.

This recipe can also be made with chicken leg quarters or bone in chicken thighs.

Ingredients

Here are what you will need to make this recipe:

Chicken drumsticks- This can be substituted for chicken thighs or chicken leg quarters.

Uncooked rice- Golden sella basmati rice or Easy cook long grain rice

Butter

Onion

Paprika

Parsley

Italian seasoning

Thyme

Garlic granules

Black pepper

Bouillion cube/Stock cube (crushed)

Oil- Vegetable, Sunflower or Olive oil

Salt

Chicken broth - Or chicken stock pot and water

How To Cook Chicken and Rice In A Pan

Step 1- Mix the paprika, garlic granules, black pepper, parsley, Italian seasoning, thyme, bouillon cube, and salt.

Step 2- Pat the chicken drumsticks dry with kitchen towels, add half of the seasoning mix to the chicken drumsticks, and mix till all the drumsticks are evenly coated in the seasoning.

Steps 3- Wash the rice with warm water till the water runs clear (this takes about 3-4 washes), drain, and set aside.

Step 4- Place a pan on low medium heat, add oil to the pan then add the seasoned drumsticks. Brown each side for 2-3 minutes. The skin will be golden brown and crispy. Transfer the drumsticks to a plate.

Step 5- Add the chopped onions to the frying pan then add butter. When the butter is melted, add the remaining half of the seasoning then add the washed rice to the pot and stir.

Step 6- Add chicken broth (or water and chicken stock pot), and salt, stir then arrange the chicken drumsticks on the rice, cover the pot, and let it cook on low heat for 25 minutes or till the water dries up.

Step 7- Transfer the chicken to a plate. Stir the rice till all is well combined then arrange the chicken back on the rice. Garnish with parsley.

Serve and enjoy.

What To Serve With

One Pot Chicken and rice is a main dish that can be eaten on its own but can also be served with sides like:

Coleslaw

Air fryer baby carrots

Vegetables

Salad

How To Store

Let the chicken and rice cool completely, then transfer it into a sealable container. Store it in the fridge for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
If storing in the freezer, it's best to portion so you reheat per portion.

Rice and chicken can be reheated in the microwave, or on the stovetop. To reheat on the stove, add rice to the pan, add some water, cover the pot, and cook on low heat until the food is heated.

Tips For Making Chicken Drumsticks and Rice

  • You can substitute chicken drumsticks for chicken thighs or chicken leg quarters if you prefer.
  • Adjust the pepper quantity to your tolerance level.
  • Add vegetables like peas and carrots if you desire. If adding, do this 5 minutes before taking the rice off the heat.
  • It's best served warm.

  • 1 kg Chicken drumsticks
  • 3 cups Rice Golden sella basmato or easy cook long grain rice
  • 6 tablespoon Butter
  • 1.5 tablespoon Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Parsley
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon Black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon Garlic granules
  • ½ teaspoon Dried thyme
  • 1 Bouillion cube/ Stock cube crushed
  • Salt to taste
